Rating Levels - For AAA Approved Campgrounds

Privately operated campgrounds that have met the requirements to be AAA Approved are assigned a rating level of 1, 2, or 3. The ratings assist members in selecting campgrounds matched to their needs and expectations - from rustic to full-service.

The levels reflect input from AAA/CAA members, AAA/CAA clubs, and the industry on attributes including visual appeal, environmental quality, and facilities.

Public campgrounds are listed in the AAA CampBook® guide as a service to members, but are not Approved or rated by AAA.

What the Campground Levels Mean

Level One: Surroundings are adequate, with modest natural appeal and limited facilities. Sites are visibly rustic and include base camp essentials. Availability of electricity and water hook-ups is restricted. Public showers, flush toilets, and other comforts are not consistently available within direct proximity of each site.

Level Two: Secluded surroundings provide an enhanced natural setting with many trees, grasses, and shrubbery. Some recreational facilities and social programs are available. Sites are visibly appealing, easily identifiable, and well defined. Most sites have either full hook-ups or electricity and water hook-ups only. Flush toilets and showers are available. There is at least one general service facility on-site, such as a visitor center, general store, laundry, restaurant, meeting rooms, or mail center.
Level Three: Secluded surroundings reflect the ultimate camping location, featuring prominent natural elements such as mountains, lakes, or streams. Extensive recreational facilities and social programs are available. All sites have a groomed appearance that enhances the natural beauty of the environment. All RV sites are equipped with full hook-ups. Some sites have 50-amp electric, TV cable, and telephone hook-ups. Temperature controlled bathrooms with heated showers reflect a good level of comfort. A variety of general service facilities are on-site, such as a visitor center, general store, laundry, restaurant, meeting rooms, or mail center.
